Number skills for life
KS4 Maths

Our Aim

  • We believe in the fact that ‘We can all do Maths’. Therefore, a positive attitude towards Mathematics is at the heart of everything we do.
  • Our key aim is for all students to be fluent in the fundamentals and have a firm appreciation for Algebra and Number calculations.
  • Students will embark on a two year journey that will build on their confidence and curiosity and encourage them to see the relevance of Mathematics.
  • For those students who already share an enjoyment of mathematics, we aim to deepen their mathematical knowledge, challenge their thinking and develop their skills in articulating mathematical language.
  • We will provide extra curricular activities, as well as opportunities to share maths related university courses and careers. Where possible we will link to REAL LIFE
  • In essence, we want to develop a deep and secure understanding of mathematical concepts through resilience to the unfamiliar and application to problem solving.

Our Delivery

  • We have carefully selected crossover topics between the higher and foundation pathway to enable all students the opportunity to reach their full potential. Their final pathway will be determined through outcomes of assessment points throughout the term.
  • Our students will be supported by spending ample time securing a deep understanding of mathematical concepts. Yet, we will promote challenge and ambition by allowing students to apply new knowledge in multiple ways and in unfamiliar settings.
  • Every lesson we will use retrieval practice to ensure students’ fluency and to improve confidence in the fundamentals of Mathematics.
  • We will use mistakes and misconceptions as an essential part of learning. This will be used to foster the positive attitude that ‘We can all do Maths’
  • Every lesson we will model examples so that students are clear about how to structure their answer and the correct mathematical notation to use.
  • Every week, students will see the relevance of the subject by exploring rich and sophisticated problems.
  • Students will learn and use Tier 2 and 3 vocabulary every week.
  • Students will build confidence in their mathematical ability through a detailed assessment journey that builds from retrieval practise to sophisticated problem solving. This progress will be kept in a student portfolio folder and will be added to twice a term.
  • Students will keep notes and work in squared exercise books.
  • Prep will be completed once a week to consolidate knowledge and will always be reviewed in the following lesson.
