Our Aim
- We know that our students often lack confidence and as such, we want them to become confident and coherent Spanish speakers and able to convey what they want to say with increasing accuracy, whether it is for immediate use or for future education or employment.
- To foster enjoyment, we ensure students gains cultural understanding and insights how Spanish speaking countries see and live their lives
- To express thoughts and ideas spontaneously and fluently.
- To help them to listen to and understand normal speed speech.
- To deepen their (previous) knowledge of grammar and vocabulary to understand how the language works in order to expose them to extended language in different contexts.
- To teach them techniques/ skills (ie: inferring) to help them to understand more challenging speaking and writing material, including literary texts.
- We make explicit links to other subjects in the curriculum to deepen and/or practise the bilingual knowledge.
Our Delivery
- Every class will ensure students are practising at least two of the disciplines in every lesson.
- Students are expected to speak in Spanish every lesson: it is an important skill that requires not just practise but confidence.
- Questioning will be embedded in each session as the main part of ongoing assessment.
- Lessons will normally follow this pattern:
- ‘DNA’ consisting of vocabulary or grammar that will give students the tools and confidence to access the rest of the lesson
- ‘Let’s remember the last lesson concept’: an opportunity to practise speaking, refresh and apply to this lesson
- Presentation of the objective for the lesson
- Reading or listening activity to introduce the topic and put the vocabulary in context
- Short independent activity after modelling by the teacher
- Plenary to check for understanding
- Students work in exercise books (1 per theme) which are kept in their teaching room.
- Students will self-mark the activities in class and the teacher will mark Prep and portfolio assessments.
- PREP will be once a week and students will have the chance to practise grammar, reading and writing about topics learnt the week before.
- There will be 2 portfolio assessments per half term which can demonstrate what they have learnt across the 4 disciplines.
